Your Guide to the Biggest and Best Events This Summer
The 2026 summer OCR season is shaping up to be one of the most stacked calendars the sport has ever seen. From world championship qualifiers to iconic destination races, there’s no shortage of events worth building your training around — and your vacation days. Here are 15 races that belong on every OCR athlete’s radar this summer.
May
1. OCR World Championships — Australia (May 2026)
The biggest event of the year. The World Championships head to Australia for the first time, with 3K and 15K championship distances plus age group competition. If you’re serious about competitive OCR, this is the one. Expect athletes from 50+ countries and world-class course design.
2. Spartan Race Monterey Super — Monterey, CA (May)
One of Spartan’s most scenic venues, set in the rolling hills above the Pacific Coast. The Super distance (10K, 25 obstacles) is challenging but accessible, and the venue is gorgeous. Pair it with a weekend on the Monterey coast.
3. Tough Mudder Chicago — Joliet, IL (May)
Tough Mudder continues to evolve, and their Chicago-area venue draws massive crowds. The 10-mile Classic course features their signature teamwork obstacles like Everest and Block Ness Monster. Great for first-timers racing with a crew.
June
4. USAOCR National Championships — June 27–28
The official U.S. national championship event. This is where American athletes earn their national ranking and qualify for international teams. The course is standardized and timed, making it the most competitive domestic OCR event of the year.
5. Spartan Race Big Bear Beast — Big Bear, CA (June)
A fan-favorite Beast (21K, 30 obstacles) at altitude. The mountain terrain and elevation changes make this one of the toughest Spartan events on the calendar. Come prepared for steep climbs, technical trails, and thin air above 7,000 feet.
6. Savage Race Ohio — Attica, OH (June)
Savage Race consistently delivers some of the most creative obstacles in the industry. Their Ohio event features the legendary Sawtooth monkey bars, the Colossus two-story water slide, and a course design that prioritizes fun without sacrificing challenge.
7. DEKA Strong World Championship Qualifier — Multiple Locations (June)
DEKA’s indoor fitness challenge format is growing fast. June qualifiers across multiple cities feed into the World Championship later in the year. Ten functional fitness zones, timed and ranked. Perfect for athletes who want competition without mud.
July
8. Spartan Race Palmerton Super/Sprint — Palmerton, PA (July)
The Blue Mountain ski resort venue is legendary for its brutality. Palmerton’s steep, relentless climbs have broken countless athletes. If you want to test your mental toughness as much as your physical fitness, this is the race.
9. BoneFrog Challenge — Charlemont, MA (July)
Founded by Navy SEALs, BoneFrog offers military-grade obstacle design in New England’s beautiful hill country. Their obstacles tend toward raw, functional challenges — cargo nets, rope climbs, heavy carries — rather than gimmicks.
10. Rugged Maniac Portland — Portland, OR (July)
A 5K with 25 obstacles, Rugged Maniac hits the sweet spot between challenging and party atmosphere. Their post-race festival is one of the best in the industry. Great entry point for newer racers who want a full OCR experience.
August
11. Spartan Race North American Championship — West Virginia (August)
The unofficial “Super Bowl” of Spartan Racing in North America. The venue typically features brutal Appalachian terrain, and the field includes elite athletes chasing podiums and qualification points. Even if you’re not elite, the atmosphere is electric.
12. Tough Mudder Season Finale — TBD (August)
Tough Mudder’s late-summer flagship event wraps their season with an event that combines their best obstacles, live entertainment, and a festival atmosphere. Details typically drop in spring — watch for the venue announcement.
13. Conquer The Gauntlet — Tulsa, OK (August)
A grassroots OCR brand that has earned cult status for their innovative and genuinely difficult obstacles. Conquer The Gauntlet events feel like the sport’s independent film scene — smaller crowds, higher obstacle difficulty, passionate community.
Destination Races
14. Spartan Race Kona — Hawaii (Check 2026 Calendar)
When available, the Hawaii Spartan is the ultimate destination race. Volcanic terrain, tropical heat, and absolutely stunning scenery. It sells out fast, so watch for registration windows.
15. FISO UIPM OCR World Championships — Limerick, Ireland (2026)
The other World Championship event this year, held under the FISO/UIPM banner. Limerick offers European charm, a passionate local OCR community, and championship-caliber courses. Combine it with a trip through the Irish countryside.
How to Choose Your Summer Race
If you’re building a race calendar, consider mixing distances (one Sprint, one Super or Beast), terrains (mountain vs. flat), and formats (competitive vs. open wave). Plan your training peaks around your A-race and use shorter events as training runs. And don’t underestimate the value of traveling for a race — some of the best OCR memories come from the road trip, not just the finish line.
Race dates and venues are subject to change. Always confirm details on the official event websites before booking travel.
