Spring is peak OCR season in the northern hemisphere. The ground is thawing, the weather is warming, and race calendars are packed with events from weekend warrior 5Ks to championship-qualifying ultras. If you’re looking to build your 2026 schedule or pick a destination race worth a road trip, these ten events across April, May, and June should be on your radar.
April: Getting Back to Race Mode
1. Early-season Spartan Sprints across the southern US. April’s Spartan calendar is heavy on southern venues where spring arrives early. Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Southern California Sprints offer excellent conditions for athletes coming off winter training who want to shake off the rust before longer distances later in the season. Expect warm, dry courses and a welcoming atmosphere for first-timers.
2. Tough Mudder spring openers. Tough Mudder traditionally opens its season with events in warmer regions, and April is prime time for 5K and Classic distance events across the southern and mid-Atlantic states. These are great targets for team events and first-timers looking for a less competitive atmosphere than Spartan races.
3. Savage Race Georgia. Savage Race’s southeastern events draw enthusiastic crowds who appreciate the series’ focus on obstacle quality. The April Georgia event typically features some of the best weather of the year — warm but not hot, with minimal rain — making it an ideal destination race for athletes traveling from colder regions.
May: Peak Racing and World Championships
4. OCR World Championships, Australia. The big one. The 2026 OCR World Championships in Australia is the sport’s marquee international event, drawing elite athletes from every continent. Even if you’re not competing, this is an event worth following closely — live coverage, daily recaps, and breakout performances will dominate OCR media all month.
5. Spartan Beast events. May is when Spartan starts scheduling more Beast and Ultra distance races as athletes begin their championship qualification campaigns. These longer-distance events are the proving grounds for serious OCR athletes, and they’re also accessible to well-prepared intermediate racers who want to test themselves beyond the 5K Sprint distance.
6. Terrain Race mid-Atlantic events. Terrain Race has built a reputation for no-nonsense OCR events with competitive pricing and solid obstacle design. Their May calendar includes multiple mid-Atlantic venues that are within driving distance for much of the East Coast population.
7. DEKA events. For athletes who prefer the controlled environment of indoor fitness racing, DEKA events in May offer an excellent alternative to traditional OCR. The format combines functional fitness stations with running segments, and DEKA races are growing in popularity as a year-round complement to outdoor obstacle racing.
June: Championship Season Begins
8. USAOCR National Championships, June 27–28. The USAOCR National Championships is one of the most important domestic OCR events of the year, bringing together the best American obstacle racers across multiple distances and age groups. If you want to watch elite-level competition on home soil, this is the event to attend.
9. Spartan North American Championship series. June brings Spartan’s championship qualifier events in the northern United States and Canada, where summer conditions finally allow for full-scale Beast and Ultra distances. These events tend to have higher competitive fields than earlier season races, so expect tougher competition and better spectator atmospheres.
10. Major festival races and charity events. June is also peak season for large charity and festival OCR events — races that emphasize community, fundraising, and fun over elite competition. Events like BattleFrog, Warrior Dash alumni events, and various regional festivals are excellent choices for team participation and first-timers who want a lower-pressure race day experience.
How to Pick Your Spring Race
With so many options, choosing the right spring race comes down to your goals. If you want to test yourself competitively, target Spartan qualifier events or USAOCR Nationals. If you want a memorable experience with friends, pick a Tough Mudder or festival-style event. If you’re a first-timer, choose a 5K distance at a venue within driving distance so your first race doesn’t require complicated travel logistics.
Whatever you choose, register early. Spring races fill up fast, and the best pricing is always on early-bird registration windows. Sign up, commit to a training plan, and spend the next few weeks getting ready. Race day will be here before you know it.
